For the CCC Student Breakfast this Saturday we’ll be meeting in the First United Methodist Church lobby at 9:30 and then heading two churches north to the Baptist church for the Lion’s Pancake Feed. 10 tickets have been donated by a church member and we have more available so feel free to bring a friend.

Just a clarification about denim Sunday. Everyone is invited, but by no means required, to wear denim.

Dan Dick has a post about a pastor who got into trouble for asking three questions: 1. what is the church, 2. what is the church for and 3. what do church membership vows mean? Jenny and I thank you for letting us ask these questions.

This coming Sunday falls during Dalton Defenders Days. In honor of this commemoration, the intrepid Nancy Wright has suggested that we all wear denim. That sounded good to Jenny and I and so we’re doing it. You’re invited to wear denim also. All I have in denim are jeans, but I imagine many of the rest of you can do better than that. We look forward to seeing you.
The name we’ve given this event so far is “Denim Sunday” but we’re open to suggestions.

This coming Sunday is the first Sunday of the month which means that in addition to being Denim Sunday* and World Communion Sunday it’s also Food Pantry Sunday. We’ve had a huge demand on our pantry and it needs to be restocked (you can find a previous post with a list of the most needed items here). We’ll also have special offering envelopes available if you would prefer to give cash to the Good Samaritan Fund (previously the Food Pantry Fund and the Emergency Assistance Fund).
*More on this later.

Stephen Colbert on the subject of migrant workers:
I like talking about people who don’t have any power, and it seems like one of the least powerful people in the United States are migrant workers who come in and do our work, but don’t have any rights as a result. And yet, we still ask them to come here, and at the same time, ask them to leave. And that’s an interesting contradiction to me, and um… You know, “whatsoever you did for the least of my brothers,” and these seemed like the least of our brothers, right now. A lot of people are “least brothers” right now, with the economy so hard, and I don’t want to take anyone’s hardship away from them or diminish it or anything like that. But migrant workers suffer, and have no rights.
— Stephen Colbert, briefly out of character in his testimony before congress.
Update: Washington Post columnist Ezra Klein has a post arguing why immigration is not only a religious and moral issue, but a practical issue for the good of the country. I had trouble following the chart, and would recommend skipping straight to the post proper.

Yesterday (Monday, September 20, 2010), I had my second to last Incubator meeting in Parsons. Today I tried (but did not completely succeed) to take a day off. Tomorrow Jenny and I will both attend a conference clergy meeting in Topeka. On Thursday, while I return home, Jenny will fly to Baltimore (at conference expense) for a conference on Friday and Saturday. Linda will be maintaining regular office hours during this time and Becky Dobbins has graciously agreed to lead the Vision Team meeting tomorrow.
