As of now (8:18 pm), and baring any dramatic changes in the weather, we will be worshiping at the regularly scheduled times (8:10 and 10:50 am) tomorrow, Sunday, January 31, 2010. The parking lots and sidewalks were cleared of snow for Helen Webster’s funeral service today. Because we’re trying to avoid any further damage to the steps on the east and south sides of the building, they have not been cleared or salted, and we’re asking you to use the main lobby entrance on the south side.

My apologies for not posting this sooner. Due to the weather, we’ve sent Linda Beever home and closed the office for the afternoon. At present, we’re still planning on both the funeral service for Helen Webster tomorrow and regular Sunday worship.

We need gently used (or brand new) paper sacks with handles for the items we distribute through the food pantry. The one’s from Braum’s work really well. If you have a cache at home please drop them off at the church office as soon as possible.

From Luke 4.16 (NRSV): “… he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom.” Until this evening, I had not recognized the inherent argument for weekly church attendance in this text. We’re not Jewish, we don’t attend synagogue, but we can follow Jesus’ example by gathering for worship every week.

A new 6′ 3″ cross has been hung in the main lobby. It was made by Tracy Alban. Both the interior of the cross and the exterior trim are made of sustainably harvested oak, but they are stained differently and thus contrast one another. The design matches that of the cross that Tracy made for the original altar table in the history room. By the use of a custom made brace, the cross is supported by four toggle bolts (with two more to keep it straight). Thanks to Tracy and Iris Alban (who stained it) and to Dave Larimore and Matt Alban (Tracy’s son) who helped hang it.

I just got the figures from Linda and learned that we collected $915 last Sunday for Haiti. This money will go through UMCOR (the United Methodist Committee on Relief). Because UMCOR’s operating expenses (which are minimal, UMCOR received the highest rating available to charitable organizations from the American Institute of Philanthropy and Charity Navigator.) are funded through the One Great Hour of Sharing special offering, every single one of those $915 will go to Haiti. We have also received 10 health kits so far and the youth are planning to put more together this Sunday.
Update: We just received 24 more health kits brought down from Independence First United Methodist Church and Linda tells me we’ve received an additional $60 since Sunday.
