I like this, but I’m left with the question of how we as a church can do this in a manner that proclaims the Christian gospel. How can we do this in a manner that lets folks know that we aren’t doing it because we are “good” people who want to help girls, but instead because we are a people who have faith in, who follow and who serve a great and good God who is at work in the world to set things right.

In an attempt to keep up with popular culture, I’ve been reading the bestseller Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. I’m struck by her description of Edward, the vampire who is one of the main characters. He is preternaturally fast, strong, and graceful. He is virtually indestructible. All his senses are heightened. I can’t shake the feeling that this is how humanity was originally intended to be and that even Edward pales in comparison to what we will be when, as the Apostle Paul put it, this perishible body puts on imperishability and this mortal body puts on immortality.
In theological terms, this concept of humanity, and indeed all of creation, restored to God’s original intentions through the work of Jesus Christ is known as recapitulation. One of my favorites of the Fathers of the early church, Irenaeus of Lyons did a great deal of thinking along these lines. I found a good summary online here.
Obviously, we’ll put our restored nature and abilities to a different purposes than the vampires in the book do. Furthermore this post is not meant to be an endorsement of the books worldview, it is instead meant simply to be an example of how we can interact with the non-Christian world.

I mentioned the new apportionment formula in my report on Annual Conference last Sunday. If you’re curious you might want to read this article. I serve on the Conference Council on Finance and Administration and would probably be able to help you with any additional questions.

Over the years, the UV rays of the sun coming through the lobby windows have done a great deal of damage to the painting of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph hanging on the lobby’s north wall. For that reason this valuable painting has been moved to the parlor where it will be rehung on the west wall. The painting will not be as visible there, but it should be out of harms way. The trustees are considering various replacements for the blank space that is now in the lobby. Thanks for your understanding.
The title of this post is meant to mirror “The Flight into Egypt.”

Tony Wood will once again be taking pictures for the pictoral directory in the main lobby this Sunday from 9:00 am to 10:50 am and then again after the second worship service has ended. Several people have asked if they need to have their photo’s retaken if they had them taken by my dad or I and the answer is no. However, both my dad and Tony take very good pictures, me not so much. So if you want to have take your picture in hopes of better results, I won’t be offended in the least.
Note: The camera pictured above is not the one Tony will be using.

We’re thankful for all the folks who have worked to help us stock the food pantry in recent months. In particular, we’re thankful to have a well stocked food pantry that allows us to turn our focus to the Pack Their Packs program. On the first Sunday of the next two months (both July and August) we’ll be focusing on filling the shopping cart (or buggy) not with food, but with school supplies. If the pantry gets low, we’ll let you know about it.

Last Sunday’ sermon, part two of a report on Annual Conference, is now online.I apologize both for the delay in getting it posted and the somewhat questionable quality of the recording. We’ll try to get both straightened out for next week.
The sermon is available at: http://blog.coffeyvillefirstumc.org/podcasts.

A VeggieTales movie event is planned for 4:00 pm on Sunday, July 19, 2009. We’ll be watching Minnesota Cuke and the Search for Noah’s Umbrella. Big Idea provides the following description:
Minnesota Cuke learns to overcome his fear of ridicule in the service of doing the right thing. … A wealthy Humphrey Muffet asks Minnesota to go in search of the famed Noah’s Ark – an artifact he wants as the centerpiece of his Biblically themed goldfish pond. Along the way, Minnesota endures much ridicule as he completes the ludicrous tasks required by an ancient book of clues. With several twists and turns along the way, the clues eventually lead not to Noah’s Ark, but to Noah’s umbrella.
This is a great show, and as usual, we’ll have theater style popcorn and drinks, pages to color, and more.
